Our Story

My name is Betty Ortiz, I was born and raised in Lima, Peru. I am the only daughter of a strong and educated family where I learned to excel and succeed. I’ve always liked to cook since I was a kid. I grew up in a very busy kitchen at my father’s (Gerardo Vides Ortiz) restaurant.

Thanks to him I inherited my skills to prepare the best Peruvian dishes, including authentic and fresh ceviches along with many seafood creations.
Most importantly, I learned to love, respect, and admire all of the different cultures and flavors from my motherland Peru. Over the years, I have used my foundations and strong values to guide me in life, which has allowed me to be so blessed and successful in the food business.

I have always walked with faith and my strength in God is where I find the wisdom to move forward. My story began in 1999 when I arrived in the United States. I worked as a waitress, cashier, hostess, and even a  manager in a wide variety of restaurants where I grew my expertise to become a professional chef.

In November of 2008, I decided to open my first restaurant in North Carolina with the hopes of giving people a taste of my passion and love for Peruvian Food. At that time, there were no local restaurants that served any sort of meal from my country.

That is how Lucky Chicken Peruvian Kitchen was born. Lucky Chicken is a tribute to my family, the spirit and flavor of the food of our country.

Lucky Chicken is a warm and welcoming restaurant distinguished by the wide variety of seafood that we offer, starting with the Peruvian ceviche. Initially, Lucky Chicken’s mission was to give people a taste of Peruvian rotisserie chicken, as said by Greg Cox from the N&O (2009), our chicken was simply delicious, moist, tender, and juicy.

Today, every meal we cook is authentic and is made with passion, love, and flavor. We seek to conquer the most demanding palates with an excellent presentation of authentic Peruvian flavor. We have a wide variety of options featured on our menu, and we are always working to reinvent ourselves with new dishes, all without losing the essence and taste of traditional Peruvian food.

I consider myself an ambassador of Peruvian food. My dreams and aspirations for my future are to be able to share my love for Peruvian food with people from different countries and nationalities. I want to bring the most authentic dishes of Peru to many more places around the country. Finally, I want to thank God because he has been the one that has always guided me in this journey, and thanks to my sons, who have inherited my leadership skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and perseverance which I am incredibly proud of.

Thanks to all who have accompanied me over the years. I look forward to sharing my passion for Peruvian food with you and would like to recommend the following dishes.

Ceviches: distinguished by the fresh marination of the seafood that gives it a citrus and tasty touch.
Lomo saltado: one of the most traditional dishes of Peru
Golden Jalea: a basket with all kinds of delicately marinated and fried seafood.
Arroz con Mariscos / Peruvian paella: Simply exquisite fruits of the sea.
